Service in the Tourism Sector

As we start 2007, may we take this opportunity to wish you and your families a happy, healthy and prosperous year.

Looking at the success formula of feeding a plant water and fertilizer so enabling it to grow & flourish, surely we can apply this to everything.

If you feed a country with tourists, investment, good service and lots of passion the outcome should be a successful tourism industry!

So it is with great concern that more and more, the quality of service and standards are dropping throughout the industry.

People often attribute this to the fact that ethical standards, in general, are dropping and that worldwide, more people seem to get way with a "don't care" attitude. However, Southern Africa has always been proud of the good quality service it's countries have provided and it is vital that we strive to maintain this image.

With the Government introduction of the Skills Levy, help is on offer but, no proper guidance is being given and not all companies are utilizing the benefits.

The increase of tourist arrivals is escalating at an alarming rate with the approach of the 2010 Soccer World Cup and now, more than ever, it is essential to have skilled people. Yet we face the problem of not having enough trained staff to match the increasing arrivals, therefore, dropping standards further.

Having a positive approach plays a huge role in choosing a career in the tourism industry, as no amount of training can make up for the wrong attitude!

So, as we head towards the biggest event Southern Africa has ever staged, surely we should all strive harder to achieve the excellence that Africa has long been known for. Happy smiling faces, friendly hardworking people and enthusiastic participants. In a nutshell, "Excellent Service"!
