Tourism sector fears for safety

With the 2010 Soccer World Cup around the corner, South Africa has again, been thrown into the spotlight regarding safety and security.

On 28 November 2006, two groups of tourists were robbed of their personal belongings at gunpoint in Langa township in Cape Town.

In the first incident, 7 tourists were robbed as they were leaving the Chris Hani Independent School after having made a donation, whilst the second incident involved 40 Dutch tourists who were robbed after leaving a restaurant in the township.

Many people do not visit South Africa because of their perceptions of crime and lack of safety. This amounts to hundreds of jobs lost if the current ratio of "12 tourists to 1 job" is true!

While we do not want to continue harping on about all the negative aspects, surely someone has to take responsibility?

The Government has brought about all these wonderful schemes to encourage tourists to visit the townships by offering subsidies for new business with in the area - but if they cannot control the crime, all their good intentions are wasted!

With the approach of 2010, every effort should be made to ensure the safety of all visitors to South Africa. If we cannot protect a small group of tourists, how on earth are we going to protect the thousands of people expected for the Soccer World Cup in 2010?
